I’ve been a mom for nearly twelve years now, and I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two types of moms.
Those who take pictures, and those who don’t.
If you’re a mom, or dad…or even adorable aunt or supporting best friend, you’ve most likely been to a dance recital or school play. There are those parents who fight for the best seats, arriving sometimes hours in advance with their giant, expensive camera and camcorders so they can capture every single second of little Johnny’s cute face.
And then there are the parents like me. We love our kids just as much, but well…let’s just say our lives are maybe less organized. We show up early, but not nearly as early. We get decent seats and are just as proud. But cameras? Isn’t that what my iPhone is for? And a camcorder? Again, iPhone? Those big cameras are heavy…and EXPENSIVE!
So, why am I saying all of this on a post about a book signing? Well, partially because I’m a rambler, and also because I’m trying to say I’m also the author who shows up at events and takes ZERO PICTURES. Yeah, none. I still have an excellent time, love meeting my readers and author friends, but I totally suck at the whole picture taking thing. Which is why this post has a random picture of my kid at my table. Because it was the only picture I took of the event. Go me!
Anyway, moving on to the actual weekend.
I was so incredibly honored to be invited to this event. Not only was it in the Nation’s capitol, which is a gorgeous place, but it was also with a group of ladies I admire and adore. Winning!
My girls and I kicked out this DC adventure on Friday, the day before the signing. My husband was in Texas so it was just the three of us. Which meant I got the honor of driving in DC. Boo….
Now, most of you don’t know this about me…but I hate driving. Like seriously hate it. It’s boring…the sun gets in my eyes. Yeah, hate it. When we go on long trips, my husband drives. He’s fine with it. Don’t feel bad for him. But since he was in Texas, I drove. It was only an hour and a half, so not bad. But it was DC, so therefore..it sucked.
Driving in DC traffic on a weekday is a nightmare. There are one way streets everywhere. There are people and construction and cops everywhere. And of course there can’t just be normal four way intersections. There have to be these intersections that look like giant spiders and the GPS just says, “Turn left!” WHAT LEFT SIRI? WHAT LEFT?!!
Anyway, we made it to the hotel in one piece. My tweenager made fun of me a bit but all was forgiven. We had a nice relaxing afternoon at the National Archives with four thousand other people, including a thousand school groups and ate dinner down the street from the hotel.
My husband managed to sneak into our hotel room that night (morning?) around 2AM after a midnight flight into Dulles so it was good to have him back. The next morning, I woke up bright and early and my assistant (my oldest daughter) and I headed down for breakfast and setup.
And then the madness descended. In all honesty, this was one of the best events I’ve ever attended. Everyone was happy and cheerful to be there…the organizers were amazing and the location was gorgeous. I spent the day meeting and greeting tons of readers, signing books and smiling. It was a great day. And I was even fed. Bonus!
My daughter especially loved all the attention. There was a moment when we finished setting up the table before the first session began that we decided to take a potty break. When we walked outside, everyone on line said hi and several recognized her from my Facebook and Instagram posts. She felt like a celebrity. I was cool for a second.
One of the best parts of group signings, besides meeting and talking with fans, is the chance for me to reconnect with my friends. Authors tend to be highly introverted. It’s just part of our job. We work alone, and our closest friends are sometimes other writers who might not live down the street or even in the same state. Getting to catch up with Mia Sheridan and her husband, Tara Sivec, RK Lily, Katie Ashley and Jasinda Wilder was great. And I got to hug Kim Holden!
After lots of promises to meet everyone in the bar after a family dinner, I totally crashed. Yep, I suck. After the four of us enjoyed a quiet dinner, I crawled back to our room, got into my PJ’s (it was seriously 7:30 at night guys) and ordered one of those ridiculously expensive in-room movies for the kids and collapsed on the bed. It was heaven.
So, even though I don’t have any pictures of the actual event, trust me. It was awesome. And to those of you that were actually there…thank you so much for making it out to see us!
I think I’ve used that title for at least five different blog titles now…
Which brings me to my first update!
When I first started my website, I used the blogging section of the page as a type of newsletter. It was an easy way to update subscribers with sales, releases and anything else book related. But, now that I actually have a newsletter, the idea of using my blog for the same purpose is well.. redundant.
And it’s not really what blogging is for…right?
Getting to the point now!
I’m going to start blogging! Not a lot…not every day, and not just about book related things. It’s what a blog should be after all (and I promise they’ll be shorter than this…probably).
So, if you’re getting this email and you’re thinking to yourself, “I don’t really want to read this crazy woman’s ramblings…I just want to know about new releases!”
That’s cool. Just sign up for my newsletter. It’s sent out only when I’m having a sale, a new release or I’ve got a special announcement. I’ll make sure to include these in my blog posts as well, but I want this part of the website to be a little “more”.
I’m so far behind in my updates that I’m two releases behind! That’s right…TWO RELEASES BEHIND!
Remembering Everly released digitally on April 5th everywhere! This is the second (and final) book in the Lost & Found series. So, if you were avoiding this series because you heard of a certain cliff hanger at the end of the first book…have no fear! The second book is here! (ha! That rhymed!)
Forgetting August! In Paperback!
Now on to the second release! Forgetting August is now available in paperback!
Yes, that’s me pointing at my own book, on release day (Also, April 5th), at my local Barnes and Noble store. It was a surreal moment. Even though Forgetting August is my eight book published, it is the first to be released in bookstores nationally and was a huge milestone in my career! So, if you happen to stop by your local bookstore and spot it, be sure to snap a picture and tag me on social media!
Also! I have updated the website store, so if you want to purchase a signed paperback (or any of my other paperbacks) you can now do so, directly from me! <3
Behind Closed Doors!
Roman is COMING!
I know you’ve been waiting…and I know it’s been a long time. So long, that half of you are probably thinking to yourselves, “who the hell is Roman?”
Think back to Within These Walls…remember Jude’s hot brother? That’s Roman! And he’s getting his own book!
This will be a standalone! Reading the Walls Duet is not required, so if you have absolutely no idea who or what I’m talking about, no worries!
Because of publishing contracts, and my writing schedule, this book is slated for release in early October! You can read the blurb now! Cover and pre-order info coming soon!
I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this, but in the interest of updates, I might as well announce all the foreign editions I have coming out (just in case you have any distant relatives you want to inform), and those that have already released! (Click on the links to check out the AMAZING COVERS!)
Within These Walls (Il mondo in una stanza) – Italy (Nord)
Within These Walls (Jede Sekunde mit dir) – Germany (Egmont/LYX)
Within These Walls/Beyond These Walls – Spain (Urano) — Coming Soon!
I know I’ve mentioned this one before, but it needs repeating. Please, please…..PUH-lease feel free to follow me on social media. I know authors often say, “I love my readers!” and then never respond to their emails…but I actually do love my readers AND respond to their emails and posts…and comments!
Here are all the fun places you can find me!
WHEW! I think that is it for updates! Although, as soon as I hit publish, I’ll probably think of a couple other things. Isn’t that always how it goes?
August is finally HERE!!
After well over a year of pitching to publishers, writing drafts, re-writing drafts, edits and waiting….Forgetting August is finally in the hands of eager readers!
I can’t tell you how excited I am for the release of the book! While Within These Walls may have been my most emotional book to write, Forgetting August was my most challenging. It’s intricate plot line and suspenseful storyline really took me to a new level as an author. Working with Grand Central on this duet was an incredibly rewarding experience and I hope you truly enjoy both Forgetting August and Remembering Everly!
A few things to know about this series:
Currently, only the e-book of Forgetting August is available. The trade paperback will release April 5th and will include some bonus content. (more on that a bit later!)
Remembering Everly, the sequel releases March 1st. The trade paperback follows on July 5th.
This is a two book series and unlike the Ready series, it does need to be read in order!
Book Summaries and Buy Links!
She can forgive, but can she forget?
Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn’t matter that she’s moved on, that she’s about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can’t hurt her-because he’s in a coma. Except that he’s not anymore.
August is awake. With no memories, he sets out to solve the mystery of his lost life. He unearths a photograph of a beautiful redhead named Everly and knows instinctively that she’s the key. But when he finds her, the August she describes is more monster than man.
Tortured by the thought of having hurt her, August wants only to become the man Everly deserves. As the new August emerges, Everly glimpses the person she first fell in love with. But can she trust that this August is real? When the final secret of their shared past is revealed, one of them will make a choice that changes their future forever . . .

So many updates!
Did everyone have a great summer? Doesn’t it feel like it was yesterday…and suddenly October is almost coming to a close!
I’ve been working furiously on several things, and am so excited to share with everyone!
So, here is a rundown of updates, news and whatnot from the land of J.L. Berg
I have two exciting pre-orders up I wanted to mention. The first is a BRAND NEW boxed set coming NEXT WEEK! What’s in the boxed set? Well, I’m glad you asked. For the first time ever, you can now purchase the entire Ready series with one click!
The Ready Series Boxed Set is currently specially priced for those who pre-order and buy on release day. So, if you’ve been meaning to pick up the series, or even have a book or two you haven’t yet read, make sure you pick this up…because it’s only $0.99 for a limited time!
Secondly, the pre-order links for FORGETTING AUGUST just went live! This is the first book in the Lost and Found series. The e-book will release December 1st, with the trade paperback following on April 5th! I can’t wait for everyone to meet August Kincaid!
This is a question I get quite a bit from readers, fellow authors and sometimes even my family when I’ve played a little too much Candy Crush! 😉
What’s coming up?
While I can’t tell you everything, I can tell you the majority of what to expect in the next year from me!
As I mentioned earlier, FORGETTING AUGUST is releasing in December. I seriously can’t wait for everyone to read this book! August and Everly may be my favorite couple yet! The best part, you get to enjoy them again in March! I don’t have a tentative date but the conclusion of the Lost and Found series will be released (in e-book) sometime in March, with the trade paperback coming in July of 2016.
Now, moving forward. I know a lot of you are like, “Where the heck is Roman?” Rest assure, I haven’t forgotten about him. In fact, he and I have been spending quite a bit of time together lately, since I’m currently writing BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. If you sitting there going, “Who’s Roman and what the heck is she talking about?” Don’t worry, you can read this book as a standalone and meet Roman then. If you can’t quite wait, and want to know what all the fuss is, dive into The Walls Duet, and meet his younger brother Jude first!
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is set to release around this time next year. I know this may bum people out, but timing wise, it’s the soonest I can get it to everyone! In the meantime, I will be polishing up Roman, promoting August and maybe creating a new hero or two for the future!
A big thanks to each and everyone of you. Thank you for reading, and here’s to a great 2016!
Two Years Today!
In the craziness awesomeness that is my life, I almost forgot that today is the two-year anniversary of my publication journey!
Exactly two years ago today, I became a published author.
Yesterday, I received a box full of the translated Italian version of Within These Walls at my doorstep. I’ve signed several other foreign deals with other countries since this specific deal, but I just don’t think I’ll ever get over this feeling. To know my books are being sold all over the world, in their native tongue. If the newebie author in me two years ago had been told something like that this would eventually happen, I would have never believed it.
Two years ago, I was still hoping to sell more than five copies of When You’re Ready…specifically to people who weren’t not related to me. 🙂
I can never fully express how much my readers mean to me–how none of this would even be possible if you hadn’t taken a chance on a unknown author with a love for chocolate and a dorky personality.
Thank you for loving my words. Thank you for falling in love with my characters. You’ve given me the opportunity to show my daughters that dreams really do come true, and you can, in fact, do what you love every day of your life.
Here’s to another two years. I can’t wait to see what the bring. We’re branching out of the indie world next year, and breaking into the bookstores!! J.L. Berg will soon be in Barnes and Noble and beyond! Forgetting August is due out sometime early next year and is being published by Forever (Grand Central) and I seriously can’t wait to share this duet with everyone!!
I’m also hoping (fingers crossed) to squeak out another standalone at the very beginning of 2016. Still undecided on the title–which is odd for me. The titles usually come to me almost as quickly as the idea, but I’m working on it! But it’s a story I’ve been dying to get on paper (computer?) for a while now! And then once that is done, it’s time for ROMAN!! I know you guys are dying for him and I promise…I PROMISE, he’s coming. (no pun…well okay, maybe a little pun intended)
And lastly, since I’ve turned this into an reflection/updates post, I’ve started a campaign with my swag to raise money for charity. Generally, all of my swag is given away at events. But, then I thought it might be better served for a specific cause. This past December, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Rheumatoid Arthritis. It’s completely altered my life–in ways I never imagined. and before my diagnosis, I really had no clue what an autoimmune disease really was–or the fact that young people could even get arthritis. In an effort at educating the public and raising money towards a cure, I am selling a few items of swag (pictured). All proceeds will be donated to the National Arthritis Foundation.
If you are interested in purchasing, please click the link below. It will take you to the ordering document.
Thanks for taking this ride with me. I hope you stick around for a few more loops and turns.
Love you all,
It’s Finally Here!!
After months of waiting…begging, possibly a bit of threatening thrown in, the sequel you’ve all been dying for is finally here!!
Beyond These Walls – the conclusion to the Walls Duet is finally live!! And during release week, you can pick it up for only $2.99!
In celebration of the release, I’ve also reduced Within These Walls to $0.99 for a limited time to give new readers a chance to snag both books for a discounted price!
The links for Within These Walls can be found here.
It’s Cover Reveal Time Again!!
Snob, who me?
The other day, I was having an email chat with my editor at Grand Central, and we were discussing cover styles for my upcoming novels. I flat out admitted that I’m a total cover snob.
Yes, I’ll admit…if you are an author and have books out there, I’ve probably looked at your covers and judged them. I know, I know…never judge a book by its cover, but come on—look at how pretty it is?!!
I’ve always been very picky when it came to who and what were on my covers. After an initial rocky start into the cover world, working with inexperienced graphic designers and stock art that had made its way around the block and then some, I’ve learned a thing or two when it comes to a classy cover.
What have I learned, you ask?
The most important thing–surround yourself with amazing people. And that is what I do. Constantly.
I am blessed to work with two wonderful women on all of my covers and each and every time, they manage to wow me.
Sarah Hansen–there will never be another cover designer I trust more than you. I swear you could design something half stoned, with a blindfold over your eyes and it would still be amazing,
Kelsey Keeton–Thank you for continuing to bring my characters to life through photography. You never fail to impress me with your unfailing talent and class. And thank you for supplying me with a never-ending supply of pretty people–especially Grant Lorscheider and Elizabeth Katherine who so effortlessly brought Jude and Lailah to life on this cover.
As some of you know, I never planned on writing a followup after Within These Walls. It was a standalone, which means it was done.
Finished. The End.
But then my inbox became flooded with emails and messages from readers begging, asking and offering a wide range of favors if I’d continue Jude and Lailah’s story. I was adamant at first.
Nope. They’re done.
But then, this tiny idea formed in my head.
But, what if?
And then it was all over…You hooked me.
So, here it is. The continuation of Jude and Lailah’s story. But a warning…be careful what you wish for. This won’t all rainbows and sunshine. Even the best of roads have a few bumps.
Kelsey, my photographer has hooked me up with some beautiful models over the past seven books, and I can’t say she has the easiest of jobs–I can be a little picky.
Lailah was easy though. I’d had Elizabeth pegged the moment the book formed in my mind and I was so glad she agreed to pose for it.
I’m glad it hadn’t because she turned out to be my perfect Lailah and I’m so honored to have her back again for Beyond These Walls. Lizzie–thank you for bringing Lailah’s ethereal beauty to life. You make this cover.
Is this real life?
February marks two years exactly.
Two years since I got this crazy idea in my head about a lonely widow and the letter she refuses to read from her dead husband.
Two years since I secretly sat down and finally began writing down the words that refused sit dormant any longer. I never expected anything from that tiny moment, when I my fingers hit the keys and I dove into the world of Clare and Logan. I never expected anything extraordinary to ever happen to little old me.
But it did. So many wonderful, remarkable things.
Including this: I’m so excited to announce I’ve signed a two-book deal with Grand Central (Forever) for a new duet! The first book is entitled FORGETTING AUGUST and revolves around Everly Adams–a woman who, after moving on with her life, discovers the one one man who could destroy it has awoken from a two year long coma.
I’m in love with this story, and I cannot wait to share it with you.
Also, I’m so excited to announce some fun WITHIN THESE WALLS news! Jude and Lailah are going international! WTW will soon be translated into Italian and German! These are my first translations and I am so excited to see my words go global!
I still find myself sitting here, looking at the original cover of WHEN YOU’RE READY, remembering that moment when I first typed the word “Prologue” and still can’t believe how much my life has changed since that moment.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me, believed in me and supported me. I could say thank you a million times over and it would never be enough.
BEYOND THESE WALLS is on its way, so stay tuned for the cover reveal and teasers! I hope you are ready for more Lailah and Jude!!
It’s the morning of Thanksgiving, and as I’m preparing to head over to my brother’s house this afternoon for a day of family fun, I wanted to take a moment to say how incredibly grateful I am for all of you.
It’s been almost a year and a half since I published When You’re Ready and every day since, I am still constantly amazed by this wild journey I seem to find myself on.
And it’s all because of you–my readers.
Thank you for taking a chance on me. Thank you for sticking by me and believing in me. Your steadfast love in my characters and stories is more than I could have ever asked for.
So, as I’m sitting around the dinner table this Thanksgiving day, I will be thinking of all of you and thanking my lucky stars I have all of you in my lives.
From a very thankful author,
