About the Author

The story...

My first novel, When You’re Ready was published in 2013. I wrote it solely for myself, truly believing I’d never show to anyone. My day job was mentally sucking the life out of me and I needed a creative outlet.

Writing was my answer.

When You’re Ready sold over thirty thousand copies its first month and that success gave me the freedom to walk away from a career I hated.

I’ve been writing ever since. It hasn’t always been easy but it’s a career and a pasion I genuinely love and that is truly something I cherish.

Headshot of J.L. Berg

The reason...

Every book I write about beautifully flawed characters and love that lasts a lifetime is inspired by the amazing family that surrounds and supports me.

A common theme I write about in my books is love being a risk–one that is definitely worth taking.

I did all the things you’re not supposed to do in life. I followed my high school sweetheart to college and married young. I left grad school after having our first child and I probably made a hundred other mistakes along the way.

But, that’s how I got here. and I wouldn’t change a thing.

My husband and I have been married for over twenty years and have two awesome kids, two very chaotic dogs and a life we built together and love.

That’s the reason.

Fun Facts...

  • I was born in Iowa, grew up in California and have lived in Virginia for the majority of my adult life.
  • I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2015.
  • My husband and I dated in middle school and I dumped him. Twice.
  • I am extremely introverted. Social gatherings can be very overwhelming for me even if I’m looking forward to them.
  • The opening scene of my first novel, When You’re Ready is based on a real event. My youngest really did fall off a ballet barre and had to be rushed to the hospital for a concussion. The rest, however, is fiction!
  • My husband and I were voted “Most likely to get married” by our senior class in high school.
  • Our family are huge nerds. Doctor Who, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings…If it’s got a lightsaber, wand or an elf in it, we’re probably obsessed.

“I love you, Mia. I loved you when we were barely old enough to know what true love was. I loved you when you left me, and I’ve loved you every day since. No matter what happens in our lives, that will be the one constant. I will always love you.”
