Less than two weeks to go!
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS…is COMING!!
It’s been almost five months since I released a new book, and I am SO EXCITED to release this one! Behind Closed Doors has been a long time coming, and I’m so happy to finally see it reach the hands of my readers!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Walls Duet, no worries! Behind Closed Doors can be read as a standalone! But, if you are one of my readers who fell in love with Within These Walls, then you are well acquainted with Roman Cavenaugh, the brutish brother who captured the spotlight without even trying. This secondary character who I created just to cause a little tension ended up stirring so much curiosity by so many–including me!
I had to know more, and so Behind Closed Doors was created! I wasn’t quite sure where I wanted to take this book, but because of publishing contracts, I was given the time to get to know this elusive man and really give him the story (and heroine) he needed.
This book is a far cry from the Walls Duet. It’s fun, sexy and at times…pretty damn funny. I would go so far as to say it’s my first tear-free book, but I’ve had several advanced readers say the ending had them weeping. (in a happy way!)
In anticipation of this book, I wanted to give everyone a sneak peek at the FIRST CHAPTER in its entirety!
Also, if you’re the pre-ordering type, here are the current links that are available. As you will notice, Amazon has yet to be set up. We will let you know the moment it goes live, but we’ve chosen to wait until release day for this retailer. (except for the paperback, which is available for pre-order!)

Time for a Makeover!
I’ve been planning this for several months now.
A Ready series redo. Why, you ask?
Well, there are several reasons, but mostly I just decided it was time for a change.
Don’t get my wrong, I love, love…LOVE the original covers. They’re romantic and colorful and I spent way too much time picking out the perfect cover models to match my heroes and heroines.
But like everything else in life, styles change. Even with book covers.
I hope you enjoy these new covers just as much as you loved the originals. I know I do. And I was totally skeptical. One other change that has come to the Ready series–all five books are now exclusively available on Kindle Unlimited. If you are a member of KU, you can now read the Ready series for FREE! (All other J.L. Berg books will remain on all platforms.)
Sarah Hansen from Okay Creations did her magic once again, creating sexy covers that are simple but somehow manage to take your breath away.
Cover Reveal: Behind Closed Doors
It’s finally here!!
Let’s all jump up and down!
No, seriously…because I know some of you were starting to doubt this book would ever actually be written. And if I’m being honest, there were times when I was ready to throw in the towel as well.
With scheduling conflicts, and health issues, when I actually had the time to finally sit down and write Roman’s story, I was scared I’d lost him. There was a point when I seriously considered postponing the book indefinitely. But I knew you guys deserved more.
Roman deserved more.
So, I put on my big girl pants and Roman and I had a serious talk. He’s a hard character to write. Most of my heroes, even the most damaged of them, are inherently good. Roman is as well, but it’s deeply buried. And it was something I struggled with. Writing someone who wasn’t charming and kind of an asshole by nature was against my inner nature. But I love the redeemable hero, and Roman is the ultimate fixer upper.
Blurb
My name is Roman Cavenaugh and I’m kind of an asshole.
Running a company isn’t easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory.
I don’t have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didn’t see her coming.
Cara Hamilton—she was supposed to be off limits…a temporary employee brought in during my assistant’s maternity leave.
But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more.
An obsession I couldn’t shake.
So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine.
All’s fair in love and war…
Coming September 13th.
Pre-order exclusively at iBooks
Cover
A book cover requires a huge team, and mine is, in my humble opinion…outstanding! A big thanks to Kelsey Keeton for another stunning photograph, and to James Freeman for modeling and being my perfect Roman! And lastly, as always…a big thanks to my amazing cover designer Sarah Hansen from Okay Creations.
Excerpt
***Unedited. Subject to changes/modifications before publication.***
“Can I ask you something?” she said, drawing my attention away from the monotony on my computer screen. I looked up to find her eyes dead set on mine. It was unnerving.
She usually tried to avoid direct eye contact with me. Maybe I intimidated her. Perhaps she found me attractive and the idea of lusting after her boss bothered her.
Believe me, it bothered me too.
In a very physical way.
“Go ahead,” I answered, unwilling to break the intimate connection she’d started.
“When you saw me… at the club that night,” she said, her eyes wavering just slightly. “What was it you saw in me? I mean, was it just the clothes?”
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Even though I’d said we’d never speak of what happened that drunken night two weeks ago, I saw something in her eyes that needed an answer.
That needed something more.
“Why are you asking?”
“It’s nothing, sorry. I’m being stupid,” she backpedaled, as she began fiddling with the hem of her skirt.
Looking back at our few interactions, I suddenly noticed the difference in how she’d acted today. Her normal never-ending stream of word vomit was there, but behind it, there was an internal struggle going on. The hemline wasn’t the first thing she’d fidgeted with. I’d watched as she’d pulled at the collar of her shirt and then, as if she’d realized what she had done was wrong, quickly lay it flat again.
“Does this have something to do with the way you’re dressed today?”
Pink tinged her cheeks once again.
“You noticed?”
I simply nodded, not trusting myself with words in that moment.
Because I’d more than noticed. It’d been damn hard not to think about anything but.
“A gift from my boyfriend,” she replied. “He said my old clothes didn’t fit in with our new life style. It was a very generous gift,” she added, never forgetting that politeness she’d no doubt been taught since birth.
“But?” I questioned, waiting for her to continue.
“But… I don’t feel like me anymore,” she finally admitted.
“And I’m guessing the night in the club was another gift of his as well?”
It was her turn to nod.
I could see the indecision and worry gnawing at her. Someone like her, sweet, honest and good… she was meant for better things than a life with a man who didn’t appreciate her.
Leaning forward, I made sure she saw the sincerity burning in my eyes as I spoke. “That night in the club, I’ll admit, I noticed the dress first.”
She opened her lips to speak but I held up my hand to stop her, wanting to make my point.
“And today, when you walked in, I couldn’t help but give a second… or third glance at the way that new skirt hugged your ass.”
Her eyes widened at my blatant honesty.
“So yes, the clothes may grab my attention for a moment or two, but the fact that I’m still interested, two weeks later? That’s you, Cara. That’s all you.”
And just like that, I’d crossed the line.
I’d hit on an employee.
And there was no going back from that.

Lovely Ladies & Naughty Books Signing!
I’ve been a mom for nearly twelve years now, and I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two types of moms.
Those who take pictures, and those who don’t.
If you’re a mom, or dad…or even adorable aunt or supporting best friend, you’ve most likely been to a dance recital or school play. There are those parents who fight for the best seats, arriving sometimes hours in advance with their giant, expensive camera and camcorders so they can capture every single second of little Johnny’s cute face.
And then there are the parents like me. We love our kids just as much, but well…let’s just say our lives are maybe less organized. We show up early, but not nearly as early. We get decent seats and are just as proud. But cameras? Isn’t that what my iPhone is for? And a camcorder? Again, iPhone? Those big cameras are heavy…and EXPENSIVE!
So, why am I saying all of this on a post about a book signing? Well, partially because I’m a rambler, and also because I’m trying to say I’m also the author who shows up at events and takes ZERO PICTURES. Yeah, none. I still have an excellent time, love meeting my readers and author friends, but I totally suck at the whole picture taking thing. Which is why this post has a random picture of my kid at my table. Because it was the only picture I took of the event. Go me!
Anyway, moving on to the actual weekend.
I was so incredibly honored to be invited to this event. Not only was it in the Nation’s capitol, which is a gorgeous place, but it was also with a group of ladies I admire and adore. Winning!
My girls and I kicked out this DC adventure on Friday, the day before the signing. My husband was in Texas so it was just the three of us. Which meant I got the honor of driving in DC. Boo….
Now, most of you don’t know this about me…but I hate driving. Like seriously hate it. It’s boring…the sun gets in my eyes. Yeah, hate it. When we go on long trips, my husband drives. He’s fine with it. Don’t feel bad for him. But since he was in Texas, I drove. It was only an hour and a half, so not bad. But it was DC, so therefore..it sucked.
Driving in DC traffic on a weekday is a nightmare. There are one way streets everywhere. There are people and construction and cops everywhere. And of course there can’t just be normal four way intersections. There have to be these intersections that look like giant spiders and the GPS just says, “Turn left!” WHAT LEFT SIRI? WHAT LEFT?!!
Anyway, we made it to the hotel in one piece. My tweenager made fun of me a bit but all was forgiven. We had a nice relaxing afternoon at the National Archives with four thousand other people, including a thousand school groups and ate dinner down the street from the hotel.
My husband managed to sneak into our hotel room that night (morning?) around 2AM after a midnight flight into Dulles so it was good to have him back. The next morning, I woke up bright and early and my assistant (my oldest daughter) and I headed down for breakfast and setup.
And then the madness descended. In all honesty, this was one of the best events I’ve ever attended. Everyone was happy and cheerful to be there…the organizers were amazing and the location was gorgeous. I spent the day meeting and greeting tons of readers, signing books and smiling. It was a great day. And I was even fed. Bonus!
My daughter especially loved all the attention. There was a moment when we finished setting up the table before the first session began that we decided to take a potty break. When we walked outside, everyone on line said hi and several recognized her from my Facebook and Instagram posts. She felt like a celebrity. I was cool for a second.
One of the best parts of group signings, besides meeting and talking with fans, is the chance for me to reconnect with my friends. Authors tend to be highly introverted. It’s just part of our job. We work alone, and our closest friends are sometimes other writers who might not live down the street or even in the same state. Getting to catch up with Mia Sheridan and her husband, Tara Sivec, RK Lily, Katie Ashley and Jasinda Wilder was great. And I got to hug Kim Holden!
After lots of promises to meet everyone in the bar after a family dinner, I totally crashed. Yep, I suck. After the four of us enjoyed a quiet dinner, I crawled back to our room, got into my PJ’s (it was seriously 7:30 at night guys) and ordered one of those ridiculously expensive in-room movies for the kids and collapsed on the bed. It was heaven.
So, even though I don’t have any pictures of the actual event, trust me. It was awesome. And to those of you that were actually there…thank you so much for making it out to see us!

National Arthritis Month!
I know what you’re thinking…the title of this blog has nothing to do with books. And yes, you would be correct. Mostly.
In most cases, the words arthritis and romance books don’t usually go hand in hand, but in my daily life…they are basically best friends.
In December 2014, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) or Rheumatoid disease. RA is an autoimmune disease that affects nearly 1.3 million Americans and causes severe joint pain, damage and immobility. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, muscle pain and even heart disease.
Since it is #ArthritisAwarenessMonth I thought I’d share my story so that anyone who stumbles upon this searching for answers might find some sort of solace knowing there are others out there struggling along with them.
In October 2014, my family and I spent a week in San Francisco. My husband and I are originally from the Central Coast of California, and coming back to the Wet Coast is always nostalgic for us. We played tourists with the kids and let the grandparents spoil them for days on end. We walked, and walked and walked and I never complained. It was a typical vacation and I was loving life.
When we got home, I began gearing up for a signing the next month. Off and on during the weeks leading up the the signing, I remember telling my husband how I kept feeling like I was coming down with the flu. I felt achy everywhere and tired. But just as soon as I was convinced I was indeed sick, the symptoms would disappear. This pattern continued for much of November.
By December I was concerned. I hurt everywhere. Like old lady level hurt. I was thirty-three at the time and in fairly good shape thanks to a love of yoga and pilates. There was no reason I should hurt so much. So off to the doctor I went. I won’t get into how long it took to diagnose me, but it was several doctors, appointments and blood tests later. They tested me for everything from Lupus to Lyme disease.
But by the New Year, I had my diagnosis. Rheumatoid Arthritis.
To me, a full time writer who wrote thousands of words a day…this was a death sentence. I thought for sure my career was over.
I was started right away on Methotrexate…the go-to drug for RA and told to wait and see. I would learn this was going to be my new life. Wait and see…wait and see.
I won’t bore you with all the specific. If you want them (drugs I failed, etc–email me) but I went through a year or more of wait and see. It was one of the most frustrating times of my life.
Nothing worked. Every drug I tried, everything my doctor did…nothing worked. I was kept me on prednisone as a precaution. If anyone reading this has ever been on prednisone long term, I know you’re rolling your eyes and saying something like “Bless her heart” right about now. In less than a year, I’d gained sixty pounds from this drug. I felt like I was living in someone else’s skin. After I turned my required manuscripts into my publisher, my writing schedule went to shit and the simple task of getting out of bed seemed monumental. I hurt everywhere, was frustrated and yes, I was severely depressed. I was in a bad place.
I finally went to my doctor and said, “enough is enough.”
With her help, I weened myself off the prednisone. That alone was a huge help. I realized the prednisone not only was destroying my body, but my mind too.
Since then, I’ve found a drug that works for me, and I’ve entered remission. I know this isn’t permanent, and I know not every day will be sunshine and roses, but things are looking up. Finally.
In my rather short journey with an incurable disease, I’ve discovered so many things about myself, my family and those around me. There will be those who step up and support you, no matter what. My husband basically ran our entire household for the better part of a year, never expecting anything in return. Sadly though, there were those in my life who disappeared, choosing to walk away, rather than understand what might be going on in my life. I’ve also made valuable friendships with others who fight, and I know, because of that, when my fingers start to ache or I can’t sleep because of the pain, they are out there right along side me.
I’ve had friends complain about one thing or another in their life to me over the past year, and the immediately revoke their statement, saying something like, “But that’s not as bad as your pain I’m sure.”
My response is this. Everyone suffers. Everyone has pain. It’s how we deal with it that makes us stronger.
Let’s all be strong together.

Forgetting August is LIVE!!!
August is finally HERE!!
After well over a year of pitching to publishers, writing drafts, re-writing drafts, edits and waiting….Forgetting August is finally in the hands of eager readers!
I can’t tell you how excited I am for the release of the book! While Within These Walls may have been my most emotional book to write, Forgetting August was my most challenging. It’s intricate plot line and suspenseful storyline really took me to a new level as an author. Working with Grand Central on this duet was an incredibly rewarding experience and I hope you truly enjoy both Forgetting August and Remembering Everly!
A few things to know about this series:
Currently, only the e-book of Forgetting August is available. The trade paperback will release April 5th and will include some bonus content. (more on that a bit later!)
Remembering Everly, the sequel releases March 1st. The trade paperback follows on July 5th.
This is a two book series and unlike the Ready series, it does need to be read in order!
Book Summaries and Buy Links!
Forgetting August
She can forgive, but can she forget?
Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn’t matter that she’s moved on, that she’s about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can’t hurt her-because he’s in a coma. Except that he’s not anymore.
August is awake. With no memories, he sets out to solve the mystery of his lost life. He unearths a photograph of a beautiful redhead named Everly and knows instinctively that she’s the key. But when he finds her, the August she describes is more monster than man.
Tortured by the thought of having hurt her, August wants only to become the man Everly deserves. As the new August emerges, Everly glimpses the person she first fell in love with. But can she trust that this August is real? When the final secret of their shared past is revealed, one of them will make a choice that changes their future forever . . .

Coming Up!
This is a question I get quite a bit from readers, fellow authors and sometimes even my family when I’ve played a little too much Candy Crush! 😉
What’s coming up?
While I can’t tell you everything, I can tell you the majority of what to expect in the next year from me!
As I mentioned earlier, FORGETTING AUGUST is releasing in December. I seriously can’t wait for everyone to read this book! August and Everly may be my favorite couple yet! The best part, you get to enjoy them again in March! I don’t have a tentative date but the conclusion of the Lost and Found series will be released (in e-book) sometime in March, with the trade paperback coming in July of 2016.
Now, moving forward. I know a lot of you are like, “Where the heck is Roman?” Rest assure, I haven’t forgotten about him. In fact, he and I have been spending quite a bit of time together lately, since I’m currently writing BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. If you sitting there going, “Who’s Roman and what the heck is she talking about?” Don’t worry, you can read this book as a standalone and meet Roman then. If you can’t quite wait, and want to know what all the fuss is, dive into The Walls Duet, and meet his younger brother Jude first!
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is set to release around this time next year. I know this may bum people out, but timing wise, it’s the soonest I can get it to everyone! In the meantime, I will be polishing up Roman, promoting August and maybe creating a new hero or two for the future!
If you want to make sure you don’t miss out on anything, please consider signing up for my newsletter. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
A big thanks to each and everyone of you. Thank you for reading, and here’s to a great 2016!
Celebrating Two Years…
Two Years Today!
In the craziness awesomeness that is my life, I almost forgot that today is the two-year anniversary of my publication journey!
Exactly two years ago today, I became a published author.
It really doesn’t seem possible. Two years seems entirely too long, and extremely short all at the same time.
Yesterday, I received a box full of the translated Italian version of Within These Walls at my doorstep. I’ve signed several other foreign deals with other countries since this specific deal, but I just don’t think I’ll ever get over this feeling. To know my books are being sold all over the world, in their native tongue. If the newebie author in me two years ago had been told something like that this would eventually happen, I would have never believed it.
Two years ago, I was still hoping to sell more than five copies of When You’re Ready…specifically to people who weren’t not related to me. 🙂
I can never fully express how much my readers mean to me–how none of this would even be possible if you hadn’t taken a chance on a unknown author with a love for chocolate and a dorky personality.
Thank you for loving my words. Thank you for falling in love with my characters. You’ve given me the opportunity to show my daughters that dreams really do come true, and you can, in fact, do what you love every day of your life.
Here’s to another two years. I can’t wait to see what the bring. We’re branching out of the indie world next year, and breaking into the bookstores!! J.L. Berg will soon be in Barnes and Noble and beyond! Forgetting August is due out sometime early next year and is being published by Forever (Grand Central) and I seriously can’t wait to share this duet with everyone!!
I’m also hoping (fingers crossed) to squeak out another standalone at the very beginning of 2016. Still undecided on the title–which is odd for me. The titles usually come to me almost as quickly as the idea, but I’m working on it! But it’s a story I’ve been dying to get on paper (computer?) for a while now! And then once that is done, it’s time for ROMAN!! I know you guys are dying for him and I promise…I PROMISE, he’s coming. (no pun…well okay, maybe a little pun intended)
And lastly, since I’ve turned this into an reflection/updates post, I’ve started a campaign with my swag to raise money for charity. Generally, all of my swag is given away at events. But, then I thought it might be better served for a specific cause. This past December, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Rheumatoid Arthritis. It’s completely altered my life–in ways I never imagined. and before my diagnosis, I really had no clue what an autoimmune disease really was–or the fact that young people could even get arthritis. In an effort at educating the public and raising money towards a cure, I am selling a few items of swag (pictured). All proceeds will be donated to the National Arthritis Foundation.
If you are interested in purchasing, please click the link below. It will take you to the ordering document.
Thanks for taking this ride with me. I hope you stick around for a few more loops and turns.
Love you all,
Jenn (JL)
